New Work in the gallery

by

Welcome to our new artist in the gallery.

Marie Mitchell is a contemporary mixed media artist who lives and works in Perth, WA. A native of Vancouver, Canada, her thread paintings are thought provoking and evocative, prompting a dialogue about our future.

Employing a large variety of surface techniques, fabrics and stitch, Marie creates evocative, lifelike imagery that tells a story engaging the viewer and drawing them in to view the intricate details.

While specialising in textile and design at the University of British Columbia and the Ontario College of Art, Marie was privileged to study under well-known Canadian textile artists Joanna Staniszkis and William Hodge.

Marie received a Judge’s Choice Award for Bridge to Extinction at the 2018 AQC ‘Bridges and Borders’ Challenge in Melbourne. Her work has been juried into local & interstate exhibitions in Australia. Resulting from her passionate concern for the environment, Marie recently completed a residency focussing on creating art-to-wear from reclaimed waste. Her works are held in private collections in Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States.

Her most recent work Shattered Hope will be touring nationwide with the ‘Australia Wide 6’ exhibition until September 2020.

Ten percent of proceeds from all sales are donated to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Australia) to support their work to conserve the dwindling koala habitat in Australia.
